That's it. No content. No headings. No meta descriptions. No internal links. Just an empty div and a script tag.

Phase 2 — Render: Googlebot queues the page for rendering — executing the JavaScript to see the final content. But this rendering queue can take hours or even days. During that delay, Google is making indexing decisions based on the empty HTML from Phase 1.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

The gap between Phase 1 and Phase 2 is where SEO problems hide:

Missing content on first pass. If your titles, headings, meta descriptions, or main content are injected by JavaScript, Google might not see them immediately. This delays indexing and can hurt rankings.

Broken internal links. Single-page apps often use JavaScript-based navigation (like onClick handlers or client-side routing) instead of real <a href> tags. Googlebot can't follow those, which means large parts of your site may never get discovered.

JavaScript errors that silently break rendering. A console error that doesn't affect your users might completely prevent Googlebot from rendering your page. You'd never know unless you specifically checked.

Resource blocking. If your JavaScript depends on third-party APIs, authentication tokens, or resources that Googlebot can't access, the rendered version Google sees could be completely different from what your users see.

The Fix Depends on Your Stack

Best approach: Server-side rendering (SSR). Frameworks like Next.js, Nuxt.js, and SvelteKit can render your pages on the server, so Googlebot gets fully-formed HTML on the first request. No waiting for JavaScript execution.

Minimum viable fix: Even if you can't migrate to SSR, make sure these critical elements are in your server-rendered HTML:

  • Page title (<title> tag)
  • Meta description
  • H1 heading
  • Canonical URL
  • Real <a href> links for navigation (not onClick handlers)

Always use real links. Replace any JavaScript-based navigation with proper <a> tags. This is the single most impactful change for crawlability.
